Security Seals NFF HQ as FIFA and CAF Begin Crisis Talks

Heavy security locked down the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) headquarters in Abuja on Monday as a joint delegation from FIFA and CAF convened emergency talks to address the deepening crisis in Nigerian football.

Armed with over 20 Department of State Services (DSS) and police personnel, security forces ringed the NFF’s “Glass House” at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, barring reporters and uninvited stakeholders from entering under strict orders “from above.”

Inside, the international delegation met with NFF management and Congress members to evaluate a contentious overhaul of the federation.

The morning session serves as a prelude to a broader stakeholder meeting scheduled for later today at the Abuja Continental Hotel, where global officials hope to broker a path out of the deadlock.

The aggressive lockdown has alarmed Nigeria’s football community, as FIFA and CAF delegations typically hear from a broad range of stakeholders before rendering a verdict.

Instead, strict security sweeps turned away key figures, including senior National Institute for Sports officials and players’ union representatives.

This heavy-handed display escalates tensions during an already fragile transition following the resignations of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several Executive Committee members.

The sudden leadership vacuum leaves the federation trapped between a fiercely contested restructuring process and an uncertain electoral timeline.

Officers fanned out around the complex, watching who came and left and capping the number of people allowed inside.

The mission follows earlier contacts between Nigerian officials and FIFA and CAF on the governance row. Monday’s meetings should shed light on planned reforms, who leads next, and how stability can return.

PerSecondNews recalls that Ibrahim Gusau confirmed on August 27, 2026 that he was leaving the Nigeria Football Federation presidency, bringing a four-year tenure to a close under intense heat over the state of the game.

He said the exit followed heavy pressure from football stakeholders and talks with family, friends and others in the game.

“Because of that, there was so much clamour from here and there, from all stakeholders, everybody,” Gusau said.

The crisis, he explained, left him and his inner circle no choice but to carefully gauge the situation before making a move.

“We made a lot of presentations with family, friends, stakeholders, and all,” he recalled.

“And I just want to tell you, I decided to resign my position as President,” he added. He then notified his board and offered them counsel. “I then advised my board members, I informed them, and I advised them,” he said.

Gusau refused to reveal where individual Executive Committee members stood or how internal communications were flowing.

He, however, admitted that contact between his office and key NFF structures had already fractured.
