Following the recent salary increase approved by the Bola Tinubu administration for the Armed Forces, former Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, retired Group Captain Sadeeq Shehu, has called on the Federal Government to clarify whether military retirees will also benefit from the new pay package.
Shehu raised the concern on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by Persecondnews, while offering his perspective on the updated compensation package for military personnel.
He noted that the Presidency announced that about 250,000 personnel would benefit, but did not clearly specify whether the figure covers only serving personnel or also includes military retirees.
“I am not clear whether this increment is only for serving personnel or includes retired personnel. That is the question many veterans are asking today,” Shehu said.
He stressed that the omission has generated uncertainty among veterans, urging the government to clearly explain the scope of the beneficiaries to avoid further confusion.
“When you increase salaries, people also expect to know what happens to pensions. That was not clearly addressed, and it is an issue the government should clarify,” he emphasized.
According to him, how government treats retired personnel will influence recruitment and retention because prospective recruits closely observe the welfare of veterans before joining the Armed Forces.
“Young people considering military careers also watch how veterans are treated. If retirees are well cared for, it gives confidence to those thinking of joining.”
He described the salary increase as a welcome development, praising the graduated structure that gives junior personnel the highest percentage increase.
“This is a very welcome development and long overdue. I particularly like the graduated approach because the most junior personnel receive the highest percentage increase,” Shehu said.
The former Air Force spokesman, however, warned that better salaries alone would not automatically improve military effectiveness or end insecurity across the country.
“A well-paid soldier is important, but salary alone cannot win battles. Equipment, training, welfare and motivation must improve alongside the pay increase,” he noted.
He urged the Federal Government to complement the salary increase with better welfare and operational support.
“Soldiers should not spend their salaries buying uniforms or equipment. Government must provide everything they need to perform their duties effectively.”
Persecondnews recalls that President Bola Tinubu had on Tuesday August 4, approved the new Armed Forces salary structure, effective September 1, 2026.
About 250,000 personnel will benefit, with junior ranks receiving the highest percentage increases and Colonels to Generals getting 30 per cent.
