Security forces in Anambra State have been placed on high alert following a Sunday night ambush on the convoy of Dr. Ben Nwankwo, Chief of Staff to the State Governor.
The attack, carried out by suspected hoodlums along the Amansea–Ufuma Road, resulted in the deaths of two police officers, though Dr. Nwankwo managed to escape uninjured.
Responding swiftly to the fatal assault, Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu, convened an emergency briefing with senior officers and tactical heads at the State Command Headquarters.
Characterizing the incident as a brazen challenge to the state’s authority, Orutugu handed down a strict 48-hour ultimatum to all operational units to apprehend the suspects, promising that the crime would not go unpunished.
“I want you to fish out the attackers and the killers of our officers. I demand immediate action to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.
“I want results. The people of Anambra State must know that the police are fully in charge and ready to protect them,” he said.
He warned that criminal elements would no longer be allowed to operate under the cover of darkness to carry out violent attacks in the state.
“This kind of killing cannot happen under my watch. We must bring the perpetrators to justice and put an end to their activities,” the CP added.
Orutugu also raised alarms over a shift in criminal tactics, citing intelligence reports that some attackers are now wearing stolen or fake police and military uniforms to slip past security checkpoints undetected.
