The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially declared Kingsley Chinda as its governorship flagbearer for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made in Port Harcourt on Thursday by the Chairman and Returning Officer of the party’s governorship primary election committee, Mr. Bitrus Kwamoti.
Speaking at the APC State Secretariat, Kwamoti declared the final result after collating the primary election returns submitted by collation officers from all 23 local government areas of the state.
He announced: ” I, Kwamoti Bitrus, chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee, here have been certified that I am the Returning Officer for the Rivers State Governorship Primary Election held on this day, 21st day of May, 2026.
“The name of the aspirant, which is the sole aspirant, is Chinda Ogundu Kingsley. He scored the total number of votes, 268, 497.
“Ogundu Kinsley, having satisfied the requirements of the APC constitution and guidelines and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner of the primary election and is, in return, elected as the party’s governorship candidate for River State.”
The Rivers APC primary attracted intense national attention due to the state’s protracted political crisis and the strong influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a PDP chieftain, over the party structure even though he has not declared his intention to join the party.
Both Wike and his estranged political godson have been embroiled in serious crisis over the control of the state.
The contest took a dramatic turn following the official announcement by Gov. Siminalayi Fubara that he was withdrawing from the APC governorship primary.
The governor’s decision to step down from the race has shifted the spotlight toward his immediate political future and the shifting dynamics within the state’s ruling structure.
