History was made as Sporting Lagos clinched their first-ever NNL crown following a high-octane Super 4 playoff.

Despite the intense pressure of the final matchday, the Lagos-based side utilized a superior goal difference to claim the trophy in one of the most dramatic conclusions in the league’s history.

The self-styled noisy Lagosians topped the four-team table with six points, having won their opening two matches, and only needed a draw in the decisive Lagos Derby to seal the championship outright.

Instead, they fell to a 1-0 defeat against fierce city rivals Inter Lagos at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, yet still emerged as winners thanks to their superior goal tally.

Inter Lagos knew they required at least three goals to overturn Sporting Lagos’ five-goal advantage heading into the clash.

The visitors struck first in the seventh minute when wing-forward Hassan Bashiru surged past a defender and coolly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Gafar Olaniyan.

That solitary strike proved to be the only goal in an intense, entertaining battle, as Sporting Lagos dug deep to hold firm despite the loss.

It marked a second successive derby defeat at the hands of their neighbours, but coach Jeffery Buter’s side still finished with a plus-four goal difference – two goals better than Inter Lagos – to claim the crown.

The triumph represents the club’s fifth piece of silverware since their founding in 2022 and ends the reign of Beyond Limits, Remo Stars’ academy side, as NNL champions.

Both Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos will now carry their fiery rivalry into the Nigeria Professional Football League next season, promising even more thrilling chapters in one of the country’s hottest local derbies.

Persecondnews reports that the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 4 is a high-stakes championship round introduced for the 2025/2026 season to crown the overall league champion after the regular campaign.

Unlike previous years when promotion and the title were decided together through a longer Super 8 playoff, the Super 4 is now a dedicated mini-tournament reserved exclusively for deciding the NNL title — with promotion already secured earlier.

The NNL splits its 36 clubs into four regional conferences (A, B, C and D). The top club in each conference automatically earns promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

These four conference winners then advance straight to the Super 4 — no extra qualifiers needed.

Participation is mandatory; any team that skips the tournament forfeits its promotion spot, which passes to the second-placed club in its conference.
The Super 4 runs as a compact round-robin league.

The four teams each play three matches (six games in total) over a few days, with every fixture hosted at a single neutral venue: Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.

For the 2025/2026 season, the tournament took place between 4 and 8 May 2026.

Fixtures are drawn in advance — this year’s draw was held on 24 April at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos — and matches are typically scheduled with two games per matchday to keep the competition intense and fan-friendly.

Standings follow standard football rules: three points for a win, one for a draw, and goal difference (then goals scored if needed) as the first tiebreaker.

The team that finishes top of the four-team table after all matches is declared the overall NNL champion and receives a ₦10 million winner’s prize, while every participating club pockets a guaranteed ₦2 million participation fee.
