Manchester United delivered a dramatic statement of intent by defeating arch-rivals Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, completing a Premier League double over their bitter foes this season and confirming their qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko fired the hosts into a commanding 2-0 lead within the opening 15 minutes, leaving Liverpool reeling early on.

The visitors mounted a fierce fightback, however, as Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back shortly after the interval before Cody Gakpo levelled the scores midway through the second half.
With the game hanging in the balance, academy product Kobbie Mainoo stepped up in the 77th minute, producing a composed side-footed finish to snatch all three points for Michael Carrick’s side and spark wild celebrations at the Theatre of Dreams. The victory marks United’s third successive win after a patchy run of just one success in four outings, boosting momentum as the season nears its climax.

While the final result appeared straightforward on paper, the afternoon proved anything but routine, with the Red Devils squandering their early cushion before Mainoo’s heroics restored order.

Carrick’s tactical blueprint shone through from the outset, with a heavy focus on exploiting Liverpool’s vulnerable left flank.

Bryan Mbeumo and Diogo Dalot proved instrumental, relentlessly targeting Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson.

The Scottish full-back was substituted early, and his replacement offered scant resistance as United repeatedly surged down that channel.

Dalot, in particular, pushed forward aggressively like an auxiliary winger, capitalising on gaps in Liverpool’s setup and occasionally finding himself in behind the defence.

United dominated possession in the early stages, enjoying as much as 66% before the first goal and 55% ahead of the second, with figures peaking at 64% around the half-hour mark.

Their pressing and ball recovery when out of possession were equally impressive, disrupting Liverpool’s attempts to build play.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool responded by tightening their structure in midfield and utilising close-knit build-up play, with Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai operating as false nines to create space.

United’s centre-backs largely held their positions rather than pressing high, allowing the visitors some territorial advantages at times.

Possession evened out after the hosts went two goals up, as Liverpool enjoyed more of the ball while chasing the game.

In the end, United’s resilience and clinical finishing in key moments proved decisive, ensuring Champions League football returns to Old Trafford next term while dealing another blow to their historic rivals.
