Tinubu Vows to Overhaul Power Sector Amid Nationwide Blackout Crisis

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration is tackling the nation’s frequent power outages head-on, promising tangible improvements in the near future.

Speaking on Friday night at the APC’s 4th Elective National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged that while there have been economic gains, the sector remains hamstrung by “inherited problems.”

He specifically cited a decaying transmission grid, massive debts to gas suppliers, and unpaid bills to power generation companies.

“I assure you, many of you lamenting the problems of electricity power. Yes, we are paying attention to that,” Tinubu stated.

He announced that the newly formed Grid Asset Management Company will feed an additional 1,500 megawatts into a fresh grid corridor to help ease the long-standing power shortages.

“We are going to improve…Electricity will become better and be rest assured,” the President said, stressing that the government is actively working to increase funding and investment across the electricity sector.

Connecting power to the economy, Tinubu argued that reliable electricity would unlock “opportunity and progress” for Nigeria’s industries.

Yet, his optimism stands in stark contrast to the reality on the ground.

Across the country, households and businesses are reaching a breaking point, frustrated by a failing grid and the resulting economic stall.

Persecondnews recalls that persistent grid collapses have plagued the nation in recent years.

Most notably, the high-profile failures of 2025 and 2026 resulted in long-term power outages, underscoring the urgent need for the overhaul the President has promised.

The Grid Asset Management Company was created on March 4 after the Federal Executive Council gave approval to President Tinubu’s proposal.
