President Bola Tinubu has issued a firm directive requiring all political appointees with 2027 elective ambitions to resign by March 31, 2026.
This mandate—affecting ministers, agency heads, and presidential aides—is designed to ensure the administration strictly adheres to Nigeria’s legal frameworks and protects the integrity of the upcoming electoral cycle.
According to a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), the order is grounded in Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and aligns with the INEC timetable for party primaries.
Signed by SGF Sen. George Akume, the directive clarifies that the requirement spans the entire executive spectrum, from Senior Special Assistants to the Chief Executive Officers of federal parastatals and government-owned companies.
In his statement, the President emphasized that this “great exit” is essential for maintaining a level playing field and upholding total transparency as the nation prepares for the polls.
The directive, communicated through Dewan Nengak Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations for the OSGF, requires all affected officials to submit their formal resignation letters through the SGF’s office no later than the March 31 deadline.
By enforcing this timeline, the administration seeks to prevent the use of public office and resources to gain an unfair advantage during party primaries.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to “strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in Nigeria,” urging all concerned officials to ensure strict compliance with the order.
