ADC, NNPP Demand Urgent Electoral Act Amendment

259

In a rare display of unity, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have launched a scathing attack on the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026.

At a joint media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed branded the legislation a “direct assault on democratic values,” alleging it was designed to pave the way for a one-party state.

Acting as the spokesperson for the opposition alliance, Ahmed vowed that both parties will exhaust every constitutional and legal avenue to block the implementation of the revised laws.

He said: “We demand that the national assembly immediately commence a fresh amendment to the Electoral Act 2026, to remove all obnoxious provisions and ensure that the Act reflects only the will and aspiration of Nigerians for free, fair, transparent and credible electoral process in our country.

“Nothing short of this will be acceptable to Nigerians.”

He demanded that the National Assembly immediately initiate a fresh amendment process for the Electoral Act 2026.

This overhaul, he argued, must expunge all controversial clauses to ensure the final legislation aligns with the public’s demand for transparent, equitable, and trustworthy elections.
