The United States has launched a large-scale military operation in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, according to US President Donald Trump.

The operation, carried out in conjunction with US law enforcement, involved strikes on the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, and other military installations.

Trump announced the operation on social media, saying, “The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country”.

The Venezuelan government has declared a national emergency, accusing the US of “military aggression” and attacking civilian and military installations in multiple states.

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has called for the Organisation of American States and the United Nations to intervene, citing concerns about the porous border and active armed groups in the region.

Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino has vowed to resist foreign troops, stating that the country will defend its sovereignty.

The US has not made such a direct intervention in Latin America since the 1989 invasion of Panama.
