President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers assigned to guard Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country, directing that they be redeployed to core policing duties to strengthen national security.

The directive emerged from a high-level security meeting held on Sunday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, attended by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

Under the new policy, VIPs requiring armed protection will now apply to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), freeing police personnel to return to frontline duties, particularly in underserved rural communities where police presence remains thin.

The President, alarmed by the security challenges confronting many parts of the country, is pushing to significantly boost policing capacity. In line with this objective, he has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers and initiated collaborations with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.

This withdrawal order is one of the most sweeping security policy changes in recent years, underscoring the administration’s resolve to tackle insecurity head-on.

To support this objective, the President has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers and initiated collaborations with state governments to modernize training facilities nationwide.
