Nigeria’s basketball body has locked in retired Col. Sam Ahmedu as the International Basketball Federation’s representative on its freshly constituted 2026-2030 board, marking a clear push to deepen global ties.
A letter dated 22 October, signed by NBBF President Dr Mustapha Abdullahi and obtained by PerSecondNews on Tuesday formally welcomed him, citing his service since 1997.
“We recognise and appreciate your longstanding contributions to basketball administration, particularly your service within FIBA since 1997, as acknowledged in recent FIBA correspondence,” Abdullahi said.
Ahmedu, also President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, brings extensive institutional knowledge and international exposure that the president believes will strengthen the federation and its links with the world governing body.
“I look forward to a fruitful working relationship with you and all board members as we pursue our shared vision for a stronger, more progressive, and successful Nigerian basketball community,” Abdullahi added, voicing confidence that Ahmedu will help grow the sport.
The appointment follows the emergence of the new board, with Ugo Udezue as vice-president and Rita Mosindi as secretary-general, alongside members drawn from different areas of basketball administration.
Abdullahi congratulated Ahmedu on the role and expressed optimism that their collaboration will advance the federation’s objectives for Nigerian basketball throughout the term.
