Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, died on Sunday, October 5, 2026, in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State, following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old sex worker.
According to reports, the lecturer checked into the hotel with Angela Defa Jacob and collapsed shortly after the encounter.
She reportedly left the room to run an errand at his request and returned to find him lifeless.
The police were notified around 8:00 p.m.
Confirming the incident, Spokesperson of Edo Police Command Eno Ikoedem said three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
She said: “On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room.”
Police confirmed that the hotel owner, manager, and the 21-year-old woman are in custody while investigations continue, with Dr. Uwuigbe’s body deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Ambrose Alli University spokesman Mike Ade Aladenika verified Uwuigbe’s employment but emphasized the incident’s private nature, noting that the woman involved was not an AAU student and that the event occurred entirely off-campus.
