The global film community has lost one of Africa’s most distinguished actors, Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.
His family announced his passing on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in a statement shared on social media, describing the internationally acclaimed actor as “The Lion of Lufodo.”
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle—the Lion of Lufodo,” the statement read in part.
According to the family, Jacobs was born on July 11, 1942, and died on September 16, 2026.
A towering figure in African theatre, television and cinema, Jacobs built an illustrious career spanning several decades and continents. He trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and appeared in numerous British television productions and international films before becoming one of Nollywood’s most celebrated pioneers.
With more than 100 film appearances, Jacobs earned widespread recognition for his commanding performances, distinctive voice and immense contribution to the growth of African cinema. His honours included the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor and several lifetime achievement awards.
His death followed years of public concern about his health, after his wife and fellow veteran actress, Joke Silva, spoke openly about the health challenges he faced.
