Following the freezing of Osun state government account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the state Attorney-General to challenge it in court.
The directive comes in response to the anti-graft agency freezing an Osun State Government account held at First Bank.
Addressing journalists at the Government House in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke slammed the EFCC’s action as unlawful and demanded answers from its chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
Framed as a issue of national importance, Adeleke called on the public to pay close attention to the unfolding dispute.
“All I ask is for the EFCC chairman to explain to the good people of Osun State and Nigerians in general why he froze the Osun State Government account and provide evidence to support whatever reason he presents.
“This and other actions being taken against Osun State are turning our democracy into a huge joke,” Adeleke said.
To contest the freeze, Adeleke instructed the Attorney-General to file a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
The EFCC had previously applied a “Post No Debit” order on the account, which is primarily used to pay state workers’ salaries.
As of publication time, the commission has yet to clarify the rationale behind the action.
