NEMA Activates National Emergency Operations Centre to Bolster 2026 Flood Response

Nigeria has officially escalated its nationwide flood preparedness and response strategy following the activation of the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC).

Launched on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, by the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, at the agency’s Abuja headquarters, the centre serves as a central hub for coordinating nationwide monitoring, risk mitigation, and emergency planning throughout the 2026 rainy season.

The NEOC will focus on collecting, processing, and analyzing real-time data to streamline disaster response and strengthen collaboration among key stakeholders.

Emphasizing that credible information is essential for swift decision-making and resource deployment, Mrs. Umar urged operational teams to work with utmost diligence and professionalism to safeguard vulnerable communities and minimize climate-related disruptions.

She further directed that all information generated and disseminated from the centre must be factual, timely and reliable to support emergency managers and other stakeholders in responding effectively to flood emergencies.

On his part, Mr. Tony Ephraim, NEMA’s Deputy Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, assured the Director-General and Nigerians that members of the centre would work diligently throughout the operation.

He emphasized that the team would ensure effective monitoring, data collection, analysis and information management to support timely decision-making and coordinated responses to flood emergencies and other climate-related hazards.

According to NEMA, the National Emergency Operations Centre will serve as the central hub for monitoring the 2026 flood situation, harmonising information from relevant sources and supporting coordination among stakeholders.

The agency said the centre will remain operational throughout the rainy season to strengthen preparedness, improve response coordination and help reduce the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
