Suspected bandits launched a deadly raid on the Bungudu residence of Zamfara State Local Government Chairman, Nura Umar Bungudu, abducting him alongside members of his family on Thursday night.
The gunmen stormed the Zango area of Bungudu town less than 20 kilometers from the state capital, Gusau and targeted the council chairman’s home.
Security forces on site put up resistance but were ultimately overwhelmed by superior firepower, leaving two police officers and two vigilantes dead.
While the assailants initially fled with the chairman, his wife, and their children, responding security operatives managed to rescue four or five of the children during a brief pursuit.
The chairman and his wife, however, still remain in captivity.
Local residents noted that formal security reinforcements arrived only after the attackers had escaped.
They attributed the rising frequency of raids in the area to the bandits’ heavy weaponry and a network of local informants aiding their operations.
Residents have appealed to the government and security agencies to strengthen security in Bungudu and other vulnerable communities across Zamfara State to curb recurring attacks.
