Cape Verde has made football history, defying the odds to become the smallest nation by population to ever reach the FIFA World Cup round of 32.

The historic milestone was secured after a gritty, scoreless draw against Saudi Arabia, locking in their second-place finish in Group H.
The Blue Sharks, making their debut at the tournament with just around 529,700 inhabitants, secured the historic milestone on Saturday morning as Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 through Alex Baena’s 42nd-minute goal.Under the astute leadership of head coach Bubista, the team navigated a formidable group featuring European powerhouse Spain, two-time champions Uruguay, and experienced campaigners Saudi Arabia.

Their remarkable campaign began with a shock 0-0 stalemate against European champions Spain on matchday one, where they displayed composure and fearlessness against one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Cape Verde then produced another gutsy showing against Uruguay, recovering twice from deficits to earn a thrilling 2-2 draw that kept their knockout dreams alive heading into the final group game.

In a tense decider against Saudi Arabia, the islanders knew a point would likely suffice depending on the other result.

They stayed disciplined, weathered opportunities at both ends, and held firm to claim the vital draw.

Spain’s victory over Uruguay ultimately confirmed their progression, sending the Blue Sharks through as runners-up in one of the tournament’s toughest pools.

For a country of barely half a million people, simply qualifying for the World Cup was a massive achievement, but advancing from the group stage has rewritten all expectations.

The squad’s maturity, fighting spirit, and tactical discipline under Bubista have been the hallmarks of their unlikely success on football’s grandest stage.

Up next, Cape Verde will face Leonel Messi’s Argentina in the round of 16, provided results in Group J unfold without major surprises.

This fairytale run has already etched Cape Verde’s name into World Cup history books as the smallest population side to ever progress beyond the groups.
