The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is cracking down on a fake letter circulating online under the name of Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
Directing security agencies to find the authors, the ministry dismissed the document as completely unauthorized and false.
The Ministry said relevant security agencies have been notified and are working to trace the source of the fraudulent document and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
It advised the public to rely only on verified statements issued through official government communication channels to prevent the spread of misinformation that could undermine national credibility and diplomatic relations, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, ministry’s spokesperson said in a statement obtained by Persecondnews on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that preliminary checks showed that the document did not originate from any official channel of the Federal Government and contained inconsistencies with established diplomatic communication procedures.
According to the ministry, the document, which reportedly contained statements attributed to a Nigerian religious leader and addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, did not originate from any official channel of the Federal Government.
It warned that the circulation of such fabricated correspondence could mislead the public and create unnecessary diplomatic tension between Nigeria and the Republic of Liberia.
“The said letter is fake, unauthorised, and did not emanate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any official channel of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the Ministry said.
It further cautioned members of the public, media organisations, and stakeholders to disregard the document in its entirety and avoid sharing unverified information online.
“The Ministry urges members of the public, media organisations, and stakeholders to disregard the purported letter in its entirety and refrain from circulating unverified documents intended to mislead the public,” it added.
The Ministry stressed the need for citizens to verify official communications through recognised government platforms, official press releases, and authenticated channels of the Ministry before accepting or sharing sensitive diplomatic information.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and responsible diplomatic engagement, while assuring the Government and people of the Republic of Liberia of Nigeria’s continued friendship and goodwill.
