A kidnapping scare at Phase 1 Primary School in Gbagalape, Abuja, threw pupils and residents into a panic on Thursday before the FCT Police Command confirmed it was a false alarm.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that the Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call at around 10:30 a.m. alleging that kidnappers had invaded the school.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilized officers and surveillance teams to the scene,” Adeh said.

Investigations later revealed that the scare was triggered when a few pupils suddenly began shouting “kidnappers” and fled the school grounds, sparking a wave of panic among teachers and nearby residents.

Security operatives quickly cordoned off the school and launched a thorough search of the premises.

“Following extensive search and questioning of persons within and around the school premises, no kidnapping incident was established, no suspect was sighted, and no victim was identified,” she stated.

Police teams also combed surrounding hills, boundaries and adjoining areas, while nearby schools were visited as part of precautionary security measures.

The police spokesperson appealed to the public to remain calm and stop spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary fear.

“The Command therefore urges members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension within communities,” she said.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi has urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities and emergencies to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency channels.
