Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s path to the 2027 presidential election has been cleared following a decisive ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Delivering the judgment on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu threw out the disqualification lawsuit brought forward by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi.
The judge held that Jideobi lacked the legal right to institute the case since he could not prove any personal damage or loss resulting from Jonathan’s potential candidacy next year.
To deter future frivolous litigation, the court slapped the plaintiff with a ₦1 million fine payable to the Attorney-General of the Federation, while also sustaining a hefty ₦20 million fine against the legal practitioner.
The judge, who said that a Federal High Court in Yenagoa and an Appeal Court had already held that Jonathan was eligible to run, said he was bound by the appellate court’s decision.
He described the lawyer’s suit as “an abuse of court process” while dismissing it for being frivolous.
