Nigerian weightlifters are dominating the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships and the 16th Mediterranean Cup in Ismailia, Egypt, capturing an impressive 10 gold and five silver medals in just two days.
Dikko said: “This exceptional outing by our weightlifters is another proud moment for Nigeria and proof that our athletes can dominate on any stage when given the right support and environment.
“The consistency, discipline and hunger shown by these athletes are truly commendable.”
He added: “We congratulate the federation, the coaches and the athletes for making the nation proud while also strengthening our prospects ahead of the Commonwealth Games.”
Also, the Director General of the Commission, Bukola Olopade, said: “Basking in the euphoria of our multi-sport successes this year, remain focused. Great achievements come with greater responsibility and this is the time for our athletes to stay mentally strong, committed and determined to reach even higher levels.
“The Commission remains fully committed to supporting every federation and athlete working tirelessly to elevate Nigeria’s image globally.”
In the women’s 48-kilogram class, Ruth Nyong Asuquo claimed all three gold medals by hoisting 74 kilograms in snatch, 93 in clean and jerk for a 167-kilogram total, beating rivals from Tunisia and Madagascar.
Onome Omolola Didih mirrored that success in the 53kg division, grabbing three golds after lifting 87kg snatch, 105kg clean and jerk, plus 192kg overall.
Rafiat Afolashade Lawal kept the momentum alive in the women’s 58kg event, securing yet another trio of gold medals to boost qualification chances for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Among the men, Favour Omovigho Agboro earned one gold and two silvers in the 65kg category, excelling with 157kg in the clean and jerk to edge out Egypt’s Mohamed Mahmoud Noureldin.
Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele contributed three silver medals through her determined effort in the women’s 63kg weight class.
The commission also lauded Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, for advancing the sport and nurturing world-class competitors.
Ten athletes are flying the Nigerian flag at the championships in Egypt, with upcoming contests offering fresh chances to swell the medal count even more.
