In the wake of nationwide political shifts, Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The governor confirmed the move following extensive consultations with political allies and key stakeholders.
The announcement came on Saturday after a strategic meeting held to analyze the consequences of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the PDP’s long-standing leadership struggle.
The session served as a platform for the Governor and his team to explore new avenues for political realignment.
Mohammed disclosed that he spent over a week in Abuja attempting to broker peace and maintain party unity.
He noted that the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate parallel conventions from rival factions fundamentally altered the party’s structure.
According to the governor, the ruling stripped both factions of their legitimacy, handing temporary control to the Board of Trustees but ultimately heightening internal instability.
Mohammed emphasized that the persistent uncertainty following the court’s verdict made his continued stay in the PDP untenable.
“After careful consideration and wide consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” he said.
While acknowledging the PDP’s role in his political journey, the governor stressed that governance and stability must take precedence.Election analysis platform
“However, as responsible leaders, we cannot allow our people to be left without a credible and effective political platform,” he stated.
Mohammed described his defection as a calculated step aimed at maintaining political relevance and ensuring future electoral success. He said the APM offers a stable alternative without legal complications.
He further disclosed that members of the State Executive Council seeking elective positions had stepped down in compliance with legal requirements.
While maintaining his emotional connection to his roots, Governor Mohammed clarified that his departure was a strategic pivot rather than a personal rift.
“We remain PDP at heart,” he remarked, “leaving not out of bitterness, but out of the necessity to sustain our struggle for good governance.”
Formally declaring his new political home, the Governor stated that after exhaustive consultations, he had made the “firm and strategic decision” to join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
To ensure a seamless transition, he outlined a comprehensive roadmap involving establishing a transition committee and a liaison team for the electoral commission, launching an online registration portal and facilitating formal resignations from the PDP and
opening direct channels with the APM national leadership.
APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle formally welcomed the governor, describing the party as a “clean, democratic” platform anchored by the motto “Nigeria First.”
Dantalle lauded Mohammed’s inclusive leadership style in Bauchi and pointed to the party’s growing momentum, evidenced by recent local government victories.
“The APM remains free of internal disputes and operates strictly in line with its constitution,” Dantalle assured, emphasizing the party’s stability.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of Mohammed’s membership card and party insignia. Dantalle explained that the APM’s symbol—the cassava plant—was chosen to represent resilience and economic value, reflecting the party’s vision for national development.
Mohammed urged his supporters to remain calm, stressing that the move was a “deliberate and carefully planned” step for the state’s future.
