A former Vice Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately weakening opposition parties and destabilising Nigeria’s democratic system.

Appearing on Channels TV’s Politics Today monitored by Persecondnews, Baba-Ahmed alleged a calculated effort to stifle opposition voices across the country.

He criticized the current political landscape for being dominated by “the not-so-good” elements who, he claims, sideline competent Nigerians to maintain their grip on power.
Ultimately, he argued that the pursuit of political control has come at the expense of effective governance.

“They have failed in governance, they have failed in security, they have failed in the economy,” he said.

“Instead of fixing Nigeria, they have made it a priority to weaken opposition parties.”

He warned that continued weakening of opposition parties could push Nigeria towards what he described as a one-party state situation.

“What is happening is deliberate. The opposition is being weakened intentionally,” he said. “If this continues, we are heading towards a one-party state situation.”

Baba-Ahmed also dismissed the opposition coalition consensus reportedly reached in Ibadan, insisting that it lacked legitimacy because key political actors, including the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), were not involved.

He argued that any agreement reached without full participation of all relevant parties could not be binding.

“The opposition consensus in Ibadan is not valid,” he said. “The PRP was not involved, so it cannot represent a true opposition agreement.”

Baba-Ahmed also added that the Labour Party is no longer what it used to be, stating that the party has changed from its original structure, ideology, and direction.

In a major political development, he announced his exit from the Labour Party and declared that he would be joining the PRP tonight, describing the move as a fresh political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I am leaving the Labour Party. Midnight today, I am joining the PRP. PRP is the new destination.”

He said the decision was driven by ideological differences and dissatisfaction with the current state of the Labour Party, adding that the PRP could become a strong alternative if properly structured.

“If PRP does what I wanted Labour Party to do in 2023, then the ruling party will have a real challenge,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed further stated that Nigeria’s political landscape is undergoing realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
