Tehran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now completely open for the passage of all commercial vessels during the remaining period of the current ceasefire, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

In a statement posted on X on Friday, Araghchi said: “In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.”

The move follows weeks in which Iran had effectively closed the world’s busiest oil shipping channel after a US-Israeli attack on Iran in February.

Earlier this week, the United States had declared it would begin a naval blockade of the strait.

Araghchi’s announcement ties the reopening directly to the fragile truce, stressing that the waterway would remain accessible only “for the remaining period of ceasefire” along the pre-designated coordinated route.

No immediate response has come from Washington to the Iranian declaration. The two-week Iran-US ceasefire is scheduled to expire on 22 April.
