Onyejeocha Exits Federal Executive Council; Reasons for Resignation Emerge

Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has officially stepped down from her role in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

Announcing her departure via X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Onyejeocha expressed deep appreciation to the President for the privilege of serving the nation.

She characterized her resignation as the conclusion of a vital chapter in her career, while reassuring the public of her enduring dedication to Nigeria’s growth and development.

“This is not an end but a new beginning. I remain committed to service, to progress, and to building the Nigeria we all deserve,” she said.

The former minister thanked the President for his trust and leadership, noting that serving under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda was both an honour and a privilege.

She also expressed appreciation to officials and staff of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment for their dedication and professionalism, stating that their collaboration helped advance policies aimed at protecting workers’ rights, promoting workplace safety, and expanding employment opportunities.

Onyejeocha further extended her gratitude to her constituents in Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency for their support and encouragement throughout her tenure.

To Nigerians, she said: “Thank you for your support, feedback, and constructive engagement during my tenure. Serving Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life.”

Emphasizing that her departure marks the beginning of a new chapter, Onyejeocha reaffirmed her dedication to the nation’s progress.

Persecondnews reports that her exit aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s recent mandate, which required all political appointees with 2027 electoral ambitions to resign by March 31, 2026.

This directive, issued through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026, aims to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

Onyejeocha joins a growing list of officials vacating their posts to pursue elective office, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Transportation Minister Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, who are seeking governorships in Bauchi and Gombe, respectively.

Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, has also exited the cabinet following the directive.
