The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the African Union Sports Council Region 2 successfully hosted a high-level workshop on Wednesday in Abuja to advance the AU’s framework for sustainable sports development.
The event brought together West African sports directors to outline strategies for enhancing talent development and global competitiveness.
Dr. Angel Martins, Acting Director of Social Development, Culture, and Sports at the AU, used the platform to remind member states of the vital importance of meeting their financial commitments.
Persecondnews reports that under the leadership of NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and other top officials, delegates analyzed practical approaches to domesticating the AU sports policy, ensuring that the continent’s sporting future remains both professional and self-sustaining.
Martins said: “Our financial Secretary is always in engagement with all the member states to ensure that they are in good standing with the Union.”
“The African Union really ensures that member states participate in the African Games so that talents is nurtured and athletes are prepared for those competitions.”

She also highlighted Africa’s rich cultural heritage, urging greater emphasis on traditional games.

“Through this workshop and by popularizing the policy, we are hoping that member states will assist us in finding a way of getting this traditional games incorporated in the school system and also sell them to other continents,” Martins said.
The workshop forms part of the African Union’s broader push for sustainable sports development, aimed at strengthening unity and cooperation among member states.
The AU’s vision is to promote sustainable development through sports, nurture emerging talents, and take traditional African games to the global stage.
