In an abrupt end to his term, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has stepped down as Deputy Governor of Kano State.
The resignation, confirmed by associates on Friday, comes just as the State House of Assembly was moving to impeach him over claims of corruption and misconduct.
The Assembly had recently issued a 14-day window for Gwarzo to answer to these charges, but the Deputy Governor chose to exit before the hammer could fall.
His political allies in the Kwankwasiyya Movement framed the resignation as a selfless act intended to protect the state from further governance crises.
The group insisted that the decision should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, stressing that Gwarzo maintains his innocence despite the allegations levelled against him.
The resignation is seen as a strategic move to de-escalate tensions as rival factions within the state’s leadership continue to clash.
Gwarzo, a key figure in the administration since its 2023 inauguration, leaves a vacuum that must now be filled according to constitutional law.
Governor Yusuf is tasked with naming a replacement to undergo the mandatory legislative confirmation process.
