Students and staff of a Lagos private school narrowly escaped deaths on Monday when their four-storey building collapsed in Ogba in Ikeja area of Lagos State..
The Yemco Nursery, Primary, and Comprehensive College structure at 11 Adudatu Street, Aguda, fell around midday—just moments after an emergency evacuation.
While no casualties were reported, the collapse has put a spotlight on building safety.
Local residents revealed that the structure had shown signs of distress earlier in the day, including falling roofing materials, which prompted the life-saving decision to vacate the premises.
“The students narrowly escaped the incident. It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated from the building that the structure collapsed,” the resident said.
An eyewitness, Taiwo Ridwan, recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the structural failure, noting that the building exhibited clear signs of distress.
“The house started cracking gradually,” Ridwan said.
“First, the window frames fell apart, then the exterior cement began peeling away. Moments later, the entire structure simply sank.”
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has since cordoned off the area to prevent further incidents.
While the school wing collapsed, an adjacent section of the property used for residential purposes remains standing.
Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed zero casualties from the incident.
