President Bola Tinubu has formally inaugurated Olatunji Disu as the 23rd substantive Inspector-General of Police during a ceremony at the State House Council Chambers in Abuja.

The event, held shortly before the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, solidified Disu’s leadership following his confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council earlier this week.

The proceedings began with the arrival of President Tinubu at 2:48 pm, followed by a rendition of the National Anthem and the presentation of the appointee’s profile by Abiodun Oladunjoye, the State House Director of Information and Public Relations.

At precisely 2:53 pm, Disu took the oath of office, officially assuming the mantle to lead the Nigeria Police Force.

The event drew attendance from high-profile figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, several cabinet ministers, and other notable dignitaries.

Family members of the new IGP, along with the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Tunji Olaopa, were also present to witness the milestone.

Right after Disu’s oath-taking, Tinubu proceeded to swear in newly appointed commissioners for the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) as well as the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

Among the FCSC appointees were Prof. Ngbea Gabriel from Benue State and Omoregie Idahagbon from Edo State.

The RMAFC commissioners inducted included Abubakar Wamakko (Sokoto), Senator Marafa Abba (Taraba), Ahmed Waziri (Adamawa), Hadizatu Mustapha (Borno), Helen Bob (Bayelsa), and Oladele Gboyega (Osun).

These inductions wrapped up just before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting kicked off at 3:01 pm, marking the first such session of the year.

Disu’s elevation to the substantive role as IGP came after the Nigeria Police Council gave its full and unanimous endorsement during a meeting held on Monday.

The swearing-in ceremony, originally scheduled for around 2:00 pm, occurred ahead of the FEC proceedings at the same venue.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted praise for Disu from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Police Council session.

The governor lauded Disu’s outstanding performance, especially his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos from 2015 to 2021, where he gained acclaim for effective crime management.

Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule also voiced strong support for the President’s decision, emphasizing that Disu’s selection stemmed from his impressive track record throughout his policing career.

This appointment follows Disu’s earlier acting capacity role, solidifying his position as the nation’s top police officer.
