Following a deadly attack on Mr. Peter Obi, former Edo governor and state ADC chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun and others on Tuesday in Benin City,  a video has resurfaced online showing Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo issuing a stern warning to Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.

In the 58-second clip, recorded on July 18, 2025, during a political event in Uromi, the governor had cautioned Obi against visiting the state without prior notice, stating that his security could not be guaranteed.

He said: “The man wey say he no get shishi, I am sending a direct message to him, there is a new sheriff in town. He cannot come to Edo State without telling me because his security will not be guaranteed.

“Whatever happens to him in Edo State, he will take it. I am serious about this.”

The video clip resurfaced on Tuesday following the alleged assassination attempt on Obi and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.

Persecondnews had reported that the politicians came under gunfire attack on Tuesday at the residence of Odigie-Oyegun.

According to a viral video recorded after the incident, windscreens and body parts of Obi’s motorcade and Odigie-Oyegun’s house gate were destroyed by bullets.

Reacting, some netizens linked the incident to the governor’s threat, warning that nothing should happen to the former governor.
