Senate President Godswill Akpabio has summoned lawmakers for an emergency session scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The sudden reconvening of the upper chamber comes amid pressing legislative matters requiring urgent deliberation.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Senate Clerk, Emmanuel Odo, asking all Senators to attend by 12:00 pm.
The statement said:“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026.”
No reason has been given for the emergency session.
However, the session comes just days after the Senate, on February 4, rejected a proposed change to the Electoral Act.
The amendment would have made it mandatory to transmit election results electronically in real-time, a measure aimed at improving transparency and trust in elections.
The Senate’s rejection has been widely criticized. Civil society groups, activists, and notable figures, including former minister Oby Ezekwesili and Afenifere, say the decision could reduce public confidence in the electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
