A Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), declaring Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the valid leader of the party.

Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgment, relying on a Supreme Court verdict from April 4, 2025, which established that Abure’s tenure had expired.

The court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Usman-led Caretaker Committee as the only valid authority to represent the Labour Party, pending a national convention.

This decision follows a suit filed by Sen. Usman, challenging Abure’s leadership.

Abure had been embroiled in a leadership crisis with the party, which led to his removal by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The party subsequently appointed a 29-member caretaker committee, with Usman as Chairman, to fill the leadership vacuum.

Persecondnews recalls that the Supreme Court had previously nullified the lower court’s decisions recognizing Abure as the LP chairman, citing that the matter was an internal party affair and non-justiciable.

The court emphasized the importance of political parties adhering to their rules and regulations.
