The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has restored power to the FCT Water Board following widespread resident complaints regarding water shortages across the Federal Capital Territory.
The utility company clarified that the initial disconnection was the result of over a year of unpaid electricity bills, a move taken only after multiple formal notices and engagement efforts failed to resolve the debt.
Recognizing the escalating public concern, AEDC’s Acting Managing Director, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, ordered an immediate reconnection to ensure water services could resume.
The company emphasized that this decision was made out of a commitment to public health and the essential nature of water to daily life in the FCT, despite the outstanding financial obligations.
The company, however, stated that the restoration of power was conditional.
It said the FCT Water Board has been given two weeks to submit and begin implementing a payment plan towards settling its outstanding electricity debt.
AEDC warned that failure to meet the terms within the stipulated period could result in another disconnection, in line with existing regulations.
It stressed that disconnection is only used as a last resort and invited the Water Board to the negotiating table to finalize a resolution.
