In a significant escalation of the state’s political crisis, four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have rescinded their earlier withdrawal from the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, the lawmakers stated they are moving forward with the impeachment due to the Governor’s “lack of remorse” regarding allegations of gross misconduct.

Specifically, they cited the controversial demolition of the Assembly complex and the reported unauthorized expenditure of public funds as the primary drivers for their decision.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu last week, but the process was put on hold when four lawmakers withdrew their support, calling for dialogue and reconciliation.

However, with their latest reversal, the impeachment process appears to be gaining momentum again.

The lawmakers insisted that the impeachment process is constitutional and necessary to resolve the political impasse in the state.

The Assembly’s failure to reconvene for plenary on Thursday, amid speculation of internal disagreements, had raised questions about the process, but members remain committed to seeing it through.
