A Federal High Court in Abuja has given a ruling barring political activist and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, from making any further public statements deemed detrimental to the peace and security of the country.

In his ruling on Tuesday, Justice Mohammed Umar warned that he would revoke the bail granted to Sowore should he violate this order.

The ruling followed Sowore’s arraignment on a five-count charge, prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS), in which he is accused of defaming President Bola Tinubu by allegedly referring to him as a criminal in posts on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.

Sowore had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Justice Umar granted Sowore bail on self-recognition, referencing the evidence that he was previously a presidential candidate and noting that his international passport remains in the court’s custody.

The bail was granted based on an application argued by his lawyer, Mr. Marshall Abubakar.

Sowore, the 2019 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) is charged with contravening the provisions of the the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024 and the Criminal Code Act by calling President Bola Tinubu a criminal.

The two other defendants listed in the charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025 are X Incorp (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) Incorp.
