A renewed wave of banditry in Niger State’s Erena Local Government Area has resulted in the abduction of 24 people, including a pregnant woman, and the separate mutilation of a blind resident.

The main attack took place on Wednesday in the Palaita community, where armed men targeted and seized labourers who were working on a farmland harvesting crops.

Eye Witness said “The attackers rounded up the workers and took them away, leaving the community in fear. In a separate incident, a blind man was brutally attacked, having his arm cut off after allegedly failing to cooperate with the bandits’ demands.”

With surrounding communities gripped by heightened fear of further attacks, residents are desperately appealing for immediate government intervention to address the state’s escalating insecurity.

The Niger State Government has remained silent on the recent incidents, prompting residents to forcefully demand concrete action to protect them from the brutal violence.
