US rapper Nicki Minaj has called for international action to protect Christians in Nigeria, citing violence and persecution.
Minaj addressed the United Nations, saying, “In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes, and killed. Churches have been burned, families have been torn apart, and entire communities live in fear constantly simply because of how they pray.”
The US rapper who has the most Billboard Hot 100 entries for a female rapper (over 120) and multiple platinum albums noted that protecting Christians in Nigeria isn’t about taking sides, but about uniting humanity.
“Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about dividing people. It is about uniting humanity,” she stated, adding, “We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other. That shouldn’t make one person feel less safe than anyone in any room”.
Nicki Minaj, who has sold over 100 million records worldwide, solidifying her as the best-selling female rapper, was invited by US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, thanked President Donald Trump for prioritizing the issue.
“I would like to thank President Trump for prioritizing this issue and for his leadership on the global stage in calling for urgent action to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extremism, and to bring a stop to violence against those who simply want to exercise their natural right to freedom of religion or belief,” she said.
Minaj stressed that attacks on places of worship, whether churches or mosques, should concern everyone.
“When one’s church, mosque, or place of worship is destroyed, everyone’s heart should break just a little bit,” she said, urging global resolve to address the issue.
