Nigeria’s new Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has declared that being a service chief demands total dedication, allowing no time for oneself.

During his screening in the Senate on Wednesday, October 29, he emphasized that they must operate under duress to fulfill their mandate of making Nigeria safer.

Oluyede made this statement while presenting his curriculum vitae and summarizing his experiences as the former Chief of Army Staff.

Being a soldier, he said, requires some “element of madness.”

Buttressing his assertion, the CDS pointed out that while a human being would ordinarily run from danger, a soldier is expected to go forward and face that challenge.

He said: “There is something special about being a soldier; to be a soldier, there is some element of madness.

“For a right-thinking person, when there is danger, you expect to retreat, but a soldier is expected to go forward and face that challenge.”

Oluyede takes over from Gen. Christopher Musa, as the Chief of Defence Staff, who was sacked last week by President Bola Tinubu.
