It’s a Shame’ – Taye Taiwo Laments Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification Struggles

"It's a shame. Upon all the good players we have playing for good clubs, it's a shame that we can't make it to the World Cup"

Nigeria’s bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently precarious, hinging entirely on the results of their crucial Group C match against Benin.

The Super Eagles must deliver in this upcoming fixture to secure their tournament spot, as a poor outcome could see them miss out entirely.

Reflecting on the team’s qualification struggles, former Nigerian international Taye Taiwo voiced his deep frustration.

“It’s a shame,” Taiwo lamented. “Upon all the good players we have playing for good clubs, it’s a shame that we can’t make it to the World Cup.”

He emphasized that Nigeria has the talent and quality to qualify, but minor issues seem to escalate into major problems.

“We have a lot of good players; we have the quality to qualify. It’s just a minor thing that becomes a big thing for us.”

Taiwo also criticized the team’s tactical approach, suggesting that Nigeria’s late start to their qualifying campaign has put them at a disadvantage.

He cited Egypt and Tunisia as examples of teams that started early and have been successful in their qualifying campaigns.

“If you are going for the World Cup, you need to start early. Because for the World Cup, there is no time to wait for anybody,” Taiwo said. “If you see Egypt and Tunisia, they started early — they won all their games.”

Persecondnews reports that the current standings in Group C have Benin leading with 17 points, followed by South Africa with 15 points, and Nigeria with 14 points.

For Nigeria to qualify, they need to win their match against Benin and hope that South Africa loses or draws against Rwanda.

The match is scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital.

The match between Nigeria and Benin is expected to be intense, with both teams fighting for a spot in the World Cup.

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Benin’s Steve Mounie are expected to be key players in the match.
