The Super Eagles have finally touched down in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, after a nail-biting emergency landing in Luanda, Angola, due to a cracked windscreen on their chartered ValueJet Airline aircraft.
The team was on their way to Uyo from Polokwane, South Africa, where they secured a 2-1 win against Lesotho.
According to Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe, the team landed safely at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo at 8:05 am on Sunday, Persecondnews reports.
The aircraft had made an initial stop in Luanda to refuel before the incident occurred, and the pilot skillfully guided the plane back to the airport after the windscreen cracked mid-air.
The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic in a crucial Group C, 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday, October 14.
Benin Republic, who are currently leading the group with 17 points, arrived in Uyo on Saturday and will be looking to avoid defeat to qualify for the World Cup.
The Super Eagles, who are third in the group with 14 points, need a win by two goals and South Africa’s failure to beat Rwanda to secure a spot in the World Cup.
The match is expected to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams vying for a crucial win.
The Super Eagles will look to bounce back from their 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in Abidjan earlier in the qualifiers.
