The ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, has turned into a thrilling contest, with Team Lagos and Team Edo vying for the top position on the medals table.

Both teams are showcasing exceptional talent, leaving other states far behind.

Team Edo, in particular, has demonstrated remarkable prowess in weightlifting, securing six gold medals, one silver, and two bronze in the Women’s 44kg and 48kg, and Men’s 56kg categories.

Their outstanding performance solidifies their position as strong contenders for the overall title.

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo lauded the team’s early lead, attributing their success to deliberate investments in sports development and the SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes youth engagement and talent discovery.

Meanwhile, Team Lagos got off to a flying start, clinching seven gold medals in swimming and delivering impressive performances in various sporting events.

The team currently sits second on the medals table with 10 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

One notable star of the competition is 14-year-old gymnastics prodigy Stephanie Ogechukwu Onusiriuka from Team Lagos.

She dazzled the crowd with her exceptional skills, winning three gold medals, one silver, and one team silver.

Onusiriuka was also crowned the Best All-Round Gymnast in Nigeria at the Games.

As of Monday, September 1, 2025, the medals table standings are:

– Edo State: 17 Gold, 5 Silver, 3 Bronze

– Lagos State: 10 Gold, 7 Silver, 3 Bronze

– Akwa Ibom State: 5 Gold, 1 Bronze

– Delta State: 2 Gold, 2 Silver, 9 Bronze
