In a bold move to enhance the efficiency and competence of Nigeria’s public sector, President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive personnel audit and skills gap analysis across the Federal Civil Service.

Persecondnews reports that this initiative, part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to develop a contemporary and effective civil service by identifying and eliminating ghost workers, resolving discrepancies in employee records, and providing a precise overview of the workforce.

According to Mrs. Eno Olotu, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF) office, the audit will create a verified digital database for personnel linked to National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).

“The initiative will also identify skills gaps in critical areas such as ICT, project management, public finance, and data analysis,” Olotu explained.

“This database is expected to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the civil service.”

Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, will lead the steering committee overseeing the audit.

The committee comprises key Permanent Secretaries, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Budget Office, representatives from the Presidency, and relevant consultants.

Walson-Jack noted that the exercise is developmental rather than punitive, aiming to reposition the civil service for present and future challenges.

She said: “The audit is expected to eliminate ghost workers, resolve discrepancies in employee records, and provide a precise overview of the workforce.

“It will also identify skills gaps in critical areas and inform policy decisions to drive reforms.”
