Nigeria’s junior Scrabble team has made history at the Pan Africa Youth Scrabble Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) celebrating their resounding triumph.

The team’s dominant performance marks a new era for Nigerian Scrabble.

Persecondnews reports that Team Nigeria showed remarkable prowess, easily sweeping both the Under 19 and Under 15 tournaments.

Standout performances came from Sophia Ekeruche and Prestige Archibong, who clinched the U15 and U19 titles, respectively.

This clean sweep of both individual and team honors solidifies Team Nigeria’s status as a dominant force in African Scrabble.

NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade, in a statement on Monday by his Special Assistant on Media, congratulated the team, saying, “This is another testament to Nigeria’s increasing dominance in sports on the continent”.

Olopade attributed the team’s success to the NSC’s Renewed Hope initiative for sports development, which aims to promote grassroots sports development and provide support for various sports disciplines.

“We are very excited to see that the objective of our Renewed Hope initiative for sports development is already yielding dividends across various sports,” he said.

He said the NSC was committed to giving every sport the attention it needs to excel, both domestically and internationally.

The NSC DG commended the Nigeria Scrabble Federation for its efforts in sustaining Nigeria’s dominance in the sport.

“Scrabble is a sport that we have always had a good impact at international competitions, and the performance in Kenya only shows that the Nigeria Scrabble Federation is on the right path in sustaining Nigeria’s dominance,” Olopade said.

Olopade credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approach to sports development, resulting in the recent successes in various sports.

“The recent impressive showing of different sports at international competitions is as a result of the new approach of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu towards sports development, where equal attention is given to every sport to succeed,” he said.
