Kano By-Election: APC, NNPP Lock Horns, Each Claims a Seat in Assembly

In Kano State’s bye-election for the Ghari/Tsanyawa state constituency, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has defeated the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

APC candidate Ya’u Garba Gwarmai won the seat in the State House of Assembly, defeating his closest rival and NNPP candidate, Muhammed Yusuf Ali.

According to INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Yusuf Waziri, the APC candidate was declared the winner early Sunday morning with 31,472 votes, while the NNPP candidate received 27,931 votes.

The Ghari/Tsanyawa seat had been vacant since the previous election, which produced the NNPP candidate, was declared inconclusive.

The NNPP, however, won the Bagwai/Shanono Assembly seat, with its candidate defeating the APC’s Abdullahi Ahmed Muhammed, who garnered 5,347 votes.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Hassan Adamu Shitu, announced NNPP candidate, Ali Lawal Al-Hassan, the winner after polling the highest votes.

Al-Hassan scored 16,198 votes to defeat the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ahmed Muhammed, who had 5,347 votes.

PDP candidate Suleiman Muhammad Lawan, came third among the 11 political parties that contested with 159 votes.

Persecondnews reports that NNPP has finally reclaimed the Bagwai/Shanono constituency, a stronghold of APC, after Saturday’s contest.

The seat became vacant following the death of a former member of the Assembly, APC’s Hallilu Kundila.
