Nigeria’s senior men’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, is set to kick off their 2025 FIBA AfroBasket campaign against Madagascar in Luanda, Angola.

The team is determined to reclaim the continental crown they last lifted 10 years ago.

As one of Africa’s basketball powerhouses, the D’Tigers have a rich AfroBasket history, including a gold medal in 2015, four silver medals, and three bronze medals.

The Nigerian team boasts a talented blend of experienced players and fresh talent, led by NBA star Josh Okogie. Other key players include Caleb Agada, Ike Nwamu, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, Talib Zanna, and Stan Okoye.

According to NSC Director General Bukola Olopade on Wednesday, the team has the talent, drive, and heart to dominate the tournament.

“We have the talent, the drive, and the heart. Now is the time to dominate the boards, run the floor, and let our team light it up,” Olopade urged.

Madagascar, making their fifth AfroBasket appearance, will be eager to cause an upset against the favored Nigerian team.

Despite their record of 3 wins and 14 losses in 17 games, Madagascar’s fighting spirit and fast-paced style could test Nigeria’s defensive discipline.

The D’Tigers will need to be at their best to overcome this challenge and set the tone for their campaign.

Nigeria’s journey to the top won’t be easy, with tough opponents like defending champions Tunisia and Cameroon awaiting them in the group stage.

The team will play Tunisia on August 15 and Cameroon on August 17.

With a strong squad and determination to succeed, the D’Tigers aim to fine-tune their combinations and build momentum ahead of these tougher matchups.
