A potential catastrophe was averted on Saturday when a vehicle transporting Tunisian athletes to the U18/U20 African Athletics Championship in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was involved in a road traffic accident by Ogun governor’s convoys timely arrival at the scene.
The incident occurred as the team traveled from the competition venue to the Games Village, according to Persecondnews.
Incidentally, Governor Dapo Abiodun was on the same route and witnessed the accident firsthand.
He immediately stopped to provide assistance, ensuring the athletes received prompt medical attention.
The injured athletes were swiftly taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta for first aid, then transferred to another facility for further treatment.
The National Sports Commission (NSC), in a statement by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director General given to Persecondnews, expressed relief that the situation was brought under control due to the swift actions of the Ogun State Government, medical personnel, and security agencies.
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade arrived at the hospital shortly after the incident and has been personally overseeing the athletes’ care, maintaining close contact with the Tunisian team leadership.
He commended the bravery and quick intervention of Governor Abiodun, who undoubtedly prevented a potentially tragic situation from unfolding.
“We wish the injured athletes a speedy and full recovery and extend our heartfelt sympathy to their teammates, families, and the Tunisian delegation.
“The safety and well-being of all athletes and participants remain our top priority,” he said.
