Nigerian shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has etched his name in the record books by becoming the first African to throw over 22m in the men’s shot put event.

At the Eugene Diamond League on Saturday, Enekwechi achieved this remarkable feat with a throw of 22.10m on his second attempt, shattering Janus Roberts’ long-standing record of 21.97m.

Enekwechi’s impressive performance earned him third place at the meet, with America’s Joe Kovacs taking the top spot with a World Leading mark of 22.48m.

Roger Steen secured second place with a personal best throw of 22.11m on his fifth attempt, narrowly edging out Enekwechi.

Despite trying to better his mark on his final attempt, Enekwechi finished with a throw of 21.68m.

Persecondnews reports that Enekwechi has been steadily making a name for himself in the shot put world since 2017.

Big Chuks, as he is affectionately known, has been putting Nigeria on the global map with his impressive performances.

His historic throw at the Eugene Diamond League is a milestone moment for Nigerian athletics.
