Chelsea secured a spot in the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 by defeating Palmeiras 2-1 in a thrilling match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Cole Palmer opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a well-taken goal, but Estevao Willian, the 18-year-old Brazilian sensation set to join Chelsea, leveled the score with a stunning strike from a tight angle in the 53rd minute.
His goal not only showcased his immense talent but also highlighted his potential as a key player for Chelsea in the future, given his upcoming transfer to the club in a deal worth £52 million.
Estevao agreed his transfer to Chelsea last summer but was not allowed to move until after his 18th birthday, which was in April.
However, the Blues regained the lead when Malo Gusto’s cross deflected off Palmeiras defender Giay Agustin and into his own goal, sealing the victory for Chelsea.
This win sets up a semifinal match against Fluminense at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday.
New signing Joao Pedro, who joined Chelsea from Brighton for £55 million just two days ago, made his debut for the club in the quarterfinal clash.
Meanwhile, Liam Delap received a yellow card that rules him out of the next round due to suspension, and captain Reece James was withdrawn during the warm-up due to injury.
