Officials of Abakaliki FC, this year’s President Federation Cup runners-up, were involved in a road accident on Sunday. The incident occurred as they were returning to Ebonyi State from Lagos.

The club, still reeling from their dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout loss to Kwara United in Saturday’s Federation Cup final, confirmed the accident in a statement on their official Facebook page.

They reported that the team’s official bus was involved in a minor incident along the Benin-Ore expressway.

The crash reportedly occurred when the bus suffered a brake failure and rear-ended a moving truck near Ondo.

Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.

“To God be the glory, no injury and no life was lost.

“On our way back from Lagos after yesterday’s President Federation Cup final to Ebonyi State today (29/6/2025), one of our vehicles (officials’ bus) suffered brake failure along the Ondo expressway and hit a moving truck from behind.

“We thank God, we all are safe and sound. To God be the glory!”

The incident comes just a month after a tragic road accident claimed the lives of 21 Kano athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

Despite finishing bottom of Group B in the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL) season, Abakaliki FC stunned the football community by defeating top sides, including Enyimba, to reach the Federation Cup final—their first appearance at that stage in the club’s history.
